Tree Planting Campaign

Fostering Sustainable Change: Planting a Greener Future with 10,400 Trees and Growing

Every season, we have made it a norm for every member of the household to plant at least 5 trees. This also cuts across various schools we work with in all our projects. We have also included the growing of bamboo. This is intended to conserve the environment meanwhile ensuring food security for communities as we champion the planting of fruit trees. Since the launch of our tree planting project in 2018, we have so far planted 10400 trees and counting to plant more.

Uganda’s forests have been depleted due to subsistence agriculture, charcoal production and poverty. Uganda has lost 41.6% of its forest cover in the last 100 years (1921-2021). In 1900, Uganda’s forest cover was at 54%. And by 2017, it was at 12.4%.94% of Ugandans rely on fuel wood with a few urban on charcoal because gas is expensive.

Community-Led Reforestation

We therefore employ local communities to plant, protect, manage and monitor reforestation projects. We  promote intercropping and community agro -forestry  address food security and reduce pressure on existing  forests and project future forests. Looking at the adverse effects of climate change, we decided to initiate a tree planting project in Kasese district, Uganda. The climate crisis is largely impacting communities with very poor livelihoods.

Torrential rains have caused devastating floods resulting in erosion along river banks. Landslides, mudslides have claimed lives and caused significant destruction of vital infrastructure, food supplies and live stock.

Receding of glaciers on Mt Rwenzori

In 1980, glaciers covered 100% of the mountain peaks of Rwenzori including margherita, stanley, speke among others. The glaciers could be seen every morning, after rains and whenever the weather was clear. Currently, you have to look for an elevated point to look at the glaciers. Most peaks are now bare and the glaciers are seen by chance. It’s because of all this that we decided to start a tree planting project sensitizing communities that they were responsible for whatever is happening today and therefore were paying a price for their contribution. The trees we plant involve non fruit and fruit trees.
