Growing Bamboo & Elephant grass at home

Bamboo and elephant grass are easy to plant at the start of the rainy season.  Cuttings should have 2-3 nodes.  Plant the cutting at an angle with just one node above ground.  Keep the soil moist for a month and they should survive for years.

During the dry season, cutting can be planted but you must make sure the ground is moist for a month.  If you have a urine pit behind your bathroom, the ground above the urine pit is usually moist.  This is a perfect place to plant cuttings.  Or you can keep the ground moist by tossing on your wash water and cooking water.  Don’t let the young cutting dry out!

We are partnering with the Catholic and Anglican Churches to give free elephant grass cutting to rural families.  Each family gets one stalk which will give 10+ cuttings.  If the cuttings are planted in the dry season, the family will use wastewater to keep the soil moist until the elephant grass is established.
